2nd Lieutenant William Gill Lindsay
William Gill Lindsay was born at 200 Newtownards Road, Belfast, on 20 October 1891, the first of three children of registered druggist Francis Lindsay and his wife Margaret (nee Gill).
Educated at the Municipal Technical Institute, Belfast, at the outbreak of war Lindsay was working at Harland & Wolff as an engineering draughtsman. He enlisted in the North Irish Horse at Belfast on 5 October 1914 (No.1264). On 1 December he was promoted to the rank of lance sergeant, and on 6 January 1915 was made sergeant. On 16 May 1915 he was reprimanded for being absent off pass for two hours.
Lindsay embarked for France on 17 November 1915 with F Squadron. On 25 August 1917, with most of the men of the 2nd North Irish Horse Regiment, he joined the 36th Division Base Depot at Harfleur for infantry training. However the following October he left for the UK for officer cadet training, joining the 16th Officer Cadet Battalion at Rhyl on 7 December 1917.
On 29 May 1918 he was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant and posted to the 6th (Reserve) Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment. He was released from military service on 5 February 1919 and relinquished his commission on 1 September 1921.
